Why I Don’t Want My Business To Be Too Professional

I want my business to be one I’d actually use myself. Something simple, built on trust, reliability, and being easy to deal with. When I started Sorrell Pressure Wash and Windows, I didn’t want it to feel like some big company with contracts, policies, and fake smiles. I wanted it to feel real. A service where people know exactly who’s turning up and can trust that the job will be done right.

To me, that’s what matters. Not how polished the website looks or how corporate it sounds, but how people actually feel dealing with you. I don’t want to be too professional. Not in the sense of being distant or overly formal. I’d rather it feel relaxed and genuine, like you’re just dealing with a normal person who happens to do a good job every time.

People often think being professional means wearing a shirt with a logo, having a bunch of forms, and using corporate phrases. But that’s not how I see it. Being professional, to me, means doing what you say you’ll do. It’s about showing up when you said you would, doing the job properly, and treating people’s homes with respect.

It’s texting the night before to confirm I’ll be there. It’s shutting your gate after I finish. It’s making sure I don’t walk through your flower beds. It’s leaving your windows clean, frames wiped, and everything tidy. That’s the kind of professionalism people actually care about — the simple, real kind that you notice without it being said. I don’t need to act like a big company to show that I take my work seriously. The quality of the clean, how I deal with people, and how consistent I am says enough.

When someone comes to your home to work around your property, you want to know who they are. That’s a big part of why I do things the way I do. You’re not just booking a company name. You’re booking me — Dan. I’m the one replying to your message, turning up with the gear, and doing the work. That’s what helps build trust. You know exactly who’s showing up every time. You can chat to me, ask questions, or just let me crack on. If something ever isn’t right, you can tell me straight and I’ll sort it. No call centres, no waiting for someone to get back to you.

That’s the kind of business I’d want to deal with myself. Someone who’s upfront, reliable, and not trying to sound like a salesman. I like keeping things straightforward. No contracts, no complicated systems, no pushy upselling. If you want a one-off clean, that’s fine. If you want regular, we’ll sort it. You’ll always know what it costs and when I’m coming. I don’t do pressure tactics or over-the-top marketing. Most people just want someone who turns up, does a good job, and doesn’t mess them about. That’s what I focus on.

I’d rather spend time doing the work right than chasing people with deals or writing long terms and conditions. Just because I keep things laid back doesn’t mean the work’s casual. The standard is always high — that’s something I don’t compromise on. I take pride in leaving every job looking spot-on. Whether it’s windows, gutters, or a driveway, I want people to walk outside and notice the difference. But I also want them to feel comfortable dealing with me. Not like they’re just another booking number or customer ID.

Most people I work for say the same thing — they just want someone who’s friendly, easy to talk to, and who does what they promise. That’s what I try to be every day. I live in Stanway and work around Colchester, Braintree, Marks Tey, and nearby areas. I’m not some far-off company that sends random workers out. When you book, it’s me that turns up. When you text, it’s me that replies. When the work’s done, it’s me that makes sure it’s right.

That local, personal side is what I think makes small businesses like mine worth using. You actually know who you’re dealing with, and I think that means a lot these days. There’s enough stress in life already. I don’t want to add to it with a complicated business. I want people to feel comfortable booking me. To know they’ll get a proper job done without any fuss. To feel like they can trust me to do it right every time.

I want Sorrell Pressure Wash and Windows to stay genuine and easy-going. Not too polished, not too formal — just real. That’s the business I’d use myself. That’s the business I want to run.
