The Tiptree Learning Curve: Why Every Job Isn't Created Equal

This week started in Colchester and wrapped up today in Tiptree. While most of the week went strictly to plan, Friday threw a curveball that reminded me why I’m constantly refining how I operate at Sorrell Pressure Wash and Windows.

The Reality of "Stubborn" Glass

I took on a window cleaning job today that I underestimated. I’ve cleaned worse-looking windows, but these were particularly stubborn. Despite having the right standard equipment, the level of bonded grime was a genuine challenge.

I’ll be honest: I undercharged for the time it actually took. In this industry, it’s easy to beat yourself up when a job takes twice as long as quoted for half the profit you expected. However, there are two ways to look at a day like today:

  1. As a financial loss.

  2. As a necessary investment in professional growth.

Adapting and Investing

I chose the latter. Instead of dwelling on the misquote, I used the experience to identify a gap in my toolkit. I’ve now invested in a specialized, professional-grade chemical to keep in the van. My standard solutions handle 99% of what I encounter, but for that 1% of nightmare glass, I’ll now be prepared to handle it efficiently without it eating into my schedule.

The Result

The most important metric for me is customer satisfaction. Despite the struggle behind the scenes, the customer was thrilled with the results and has signed on as a new regular client.

The "loss" on today’s labor is essentially the acquisition cost of a long-term contract and a better-equipped van.

Looking Ahead

The weekend will be spent on admin and getting through a backlog of quotes. If you’ve got windows or exterior surfaces that haven't been touched in years, I’m ready for them—and I now have the specific kit to make sure they come up like new.
