Why blocked gutters matter

Gutters are there to move rainwater away from the roofline, walls and foundations. When they fill with moss, leaves and silt, water can spill over the edge or sit where it should not. Over time that can contribute to staining, damp patches, rotten fascias and water running down brickwork.

Signs your gutters may be blocked

Common warning signs include water overflowing during rain, plants growing from the gutter, moss sitting along the roof edge, staining below joints, damp near the top of walls, or water missing the downpipe completely. If you are in Braintree, Great Notley, Rayne or Cressing and have trees nearby, gutters may need checking more often.

  • Water spilling over the gutter edge
  • Plants, moss or silt visible from the ground
  • Staining on walls below the roofline
  • Damp smells or patches near external walls

How ground-based gutter clearing works

A gutter vacuum uses extendable poles to remove debris from the ground. This avoids climbing onto the roof for standard clearing jobs. Before-and-after photos can help show what has been removed and whether anything else needs attention, such as damaged guttering or a suspected internal downpipe blockage.

How often should gutters be cleared?

Most homes benefit from gutter clearing once a year, often after autumn leaf fall. Homes near trees, older roofs or moss-heavy tiles may need it twice a year. If water is already overflowing, book sooner rather than waiting for a routine slot.

What gutter clearing does not include

Standard gutter clearing removes loose debris from the gutters. It does not replace broken parts, realign guttering, repair leaks or solve underground drainage issues. If a repair problem is spotted, Dan can let you know so you can contact the right trade.

If you are in Colchester, Stanway, Tiptree, Braintree, Marks Tey, Coggeshall, Kelvedon or a nearby Essex village, send Dan a few photos and your postcode. For most window cleaning, gutter clearing and smaller exterior cleaning jobs, photos are enough to give a clear price and sensible options without a long site visit. Include front and back photos, any awkward access, and whether you want a one-off clean or regular maintenance. Clear photos also help spot useful add-ons before the visit.
